Headquartered in Santa Barbara, California, the Foundation is a non-profit organization which makes grants to support research in culinary history, scholarships for professional culinary training, food writing and media as well as professional development and food literacy programs. Over the last decade, the Foundation has made more than $2 million in grants to other non-profits. In 2015, the Foundation created the Julia Child Award, presented at an annual Food History Gala hosted by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. This annual Award honors an individual who has made a profound and significant difference in the way America cooks, eats and drinks and is accompanied by a $50,000 grant from the Foundation to a food-related non-profit selected by the recipient. Shellfish Co. offers limited-time Ridgeback Shrimp

SB Shellfish Co. offers limited-time Ridgeback Shrimp

The local Ridgeback Shrimp season is open now through the end of May and that means these large shrimp are served at the Santa Barbara Shellfish Company, the bustling, local, family-owned restaurant at the end of Santa Barbara’s iconic Stearns Wharf, for a limited time.
Also known as “Santa Barbara Shrimp,” the shrimp are caught by local fishermen off the Santa Barbara coast then boiled in water mixed with beer and spices and served immediately. They will be available in limited quantities this summer.

“I love all shellfish, but these are my favorite,” said Adam White, who co-owns the restaurant with his father, Tom White. “This is a throw-the-shells-on-the-ground kind of meal. It is a total throwback, old-time local meal.“

Tom White started the restaurant with his wife in 1980 and later brought his son into the operation. Over the years, the Santa Barbara Shellfish Company has shifted from a wholesale store to a restaurant, but never lost its local, small-town focus.

The restaurant’s specialty-seen on its logo-is crab caught year-round by local fishermen off Santa Rosa Island.

“The fishery off of Santa Rosa Island is very healthy,” Adam White said. “Our local crab population is very sustainable.”

Conway Family Wines premieres three new spring wines

Conway Family Wines, a local family-owned and operated winery, will premiere three new white wines this spring.

In July 2011, the Conway Family opened the Deep Sea Wine tasting room on Stearns Wharf. The Conways produce estate- and locally-sourced wines under the Deep Sea and Conway labels. Siblings Gareth, Tom, Gillian and John share the daily operation and management responsibilities at Conway Family Wines from the wine production to the sales and marketing of their wines in their tasting room and nationally.
The winery was founded in 2007 by the family, and now has 15 employees and bottles 15,000 cases of wine annually. This year, Madame Rosinka, who took over the business from her mother, celebrates her 50th anniversary reading for clients in Santa Barbara and visitors from all around the world.

“We are thrilled to operate our tasting room on Stearns Wharf,” said Tom Conway, 31, the vice president of business development. “This location has helped us to build our business from the ground up. We started with nothing but our vineyards, six years later we have produced multiple vintages and have a beautiful tasting room space to share our wines and the story of our winemaking.”

Now, they are “rolling out the barrels” on three new white wines. The wines are a Deep Sea Grenache Blanc, Central Coast, 2013; Deep Sea Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County, 2012; and Deep Sea Estate Sauvignon Blanc, “Coquina Vineyard,” 2013. For more information, visit www.conwayfamilywines.com.

Harbor Restaurant on Stearns Wharf Receives National Wine List Award of Excellence

The Harbor Restaurant received the magazine’s 2013 Wine List Award of Excellence for its wine list. This marks the 12th year in a row the restaurant has received this honor.

To qualify for the award, restaurants must offer interesting wine selections, have a wine list appropriate to their cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers, according to Wine Spectator.

“We are honored to be included on the wine list once again,” said Jordan Scott, director of operations. “We strive to give our guests the best experience possible—from the ocean view, to the fresh fish, USDA prime steaks and, of course, our quality wine.”

Scott’s dad, John Scott, purchased The Harbor Restaurant in 1988, renovated it and reopened it in 1989. The father-son duo have worked together for the past five years.

Prior to the Scotts, the Williams family operated The Harbor Restaurant, which was destroyed by fire in 1971 and rebuilt in 1981. The Harbor Restaurant specializes in California wines.

Jordan Scott attended San Marcos High School as well as the University of the Pacific.

Miguel Flores – general manager at Moby Dick

Stearns Wharf Press Releases

Miguel Flores – general manager at Moby Dick, a family–friendly restaurant on Stearns Wharf –
celebrates 10 years at the oceanfront restaurant this year.

NoozHawk Article    Casa Magazine

Flores grew up in Mexico City and came to San Jose as a teenager. He attended De Anza Community College and started working in restaurants as a bus boy. He moved to Santa Barbara on recommendation from a friend and got a job at Moby Dick after the same friend, who worked at the restaurant then, referred him. Flores started as a server.

“The minute I walked into the restaurant, I was in love,” Flores said. “It was early in the morning and still dark when I first walked in. When the sun rose, I said, ‘This is it. I don’t want to work anywhere else.’”

Now, 10 years later, Flores is general manager, managing more than 60 employees.

Under Flores’ leadership, Moby Dick has a revamped menu with fewer, higher-quality options. All ingredients are local, purchased from The Berry Man Inc., Jordano’s Food service, Harbor Meat & Seafood and the downtown farmer’s market, Flores said.

“Our business is better than ever,” Flores said. “We are breaking records.”
